Indian PM Modi To Meet Elon Musk During US Trip
During his current visit to the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Tesla CEO and Twitter owner Elon Musk. Tech billionaire Elon Musk would be among the first set of CEOs to call on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening in New York, the United States.
PM Modi and Musk were last seen together in 2015, when Modi paid a visit to Musk's Tesla factory and expressed interest in the cutting-edge technology of the vehicles. During his visit, Tesla engineers gave Modi a presentation on why electric cars can be better than gasoline-powered cars.
In recent years, the Indian government has had multiple rounds of meetings with Tesla management to discuss the prospect of relocating portions of Tesla's supply chain to the Republic of India. However, Tesla and the Indian government are at odds on a variety of topics, including import duties, taxes, and China's issues.
According to reports, Tesla has no clear intentions to establish a manufacturing unit in India. There is, nevertheless, considerable interest in India as a market. Tesla executives were in India just a few days ago for talks with Indian authorities ahead of the Prime Minister's visit to the United States.
Over two years ago, Tesla began assembling an Indian team with the intention of first importing cars into the nation and then establishing a manufacturing operation once sales of the cars hit a certain threshold. One of the richest men in the world, Elon Musk, had requested a tariff reduction from 110 per cent to 40 per cent on Tesla vehicles imported from the People’s Republic of China into India. The Republic of India had declined a tariff reduction on the grounds that Tesla must provide a roadmap for manufacturing in India before any duty concessions can be granted.
