India outrage after two women paraded naked in Manipur

A video showing two women being paraded naked by a group of people in Manipur, the Republic of India's violent north-eastern state, has stirred outrage in the country.

The police said they have initiated a gang rape investigation and have arrested one man, adding that more people will be caught soon.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Damodaran Modi, said that the brutal incident had "shamed India" and that "no guilty would be spared.” He said, “I assure the nation, the law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven.”

Parliament's session in the Indian capital was also disrupted on Thursday as legislators requested a debate on the issue in Manipur.

Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, expressed concern over the assault against the two women. He said that the Supreme Court was "deeply disturbed over the video.”

The assault on the two women occurred on May 4, according to police, but it grabbed national news on Thursday after the video went viral on social media platforms. Later on, the federal government ordered that the video be removed from all social media platforms.

At least 130 people have died and 60,000 have been homeless in Manipur since ethnic hostilities between the Meitei and Kuki clans erupted in May this year.

On Wednesday, the horrifying footage of the two women was shared on social media. The video showed them being dragged and molested by a group of men before being pushed into a field.

According to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), the atrocities were committed against women from the Kuki-Zo ethnic community in a village in Kangpokpi district. ITLF also claimed that the women were gang raped by those people. The women were begging their attackers to show some mercy.
