PM Modi host SCO summit online with Xi, Putin, Sharif

The Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi, is set to host the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) summit online on Tuesday. 

PM Modi is likely to be joined by Xi Jinping, the President of the People's Republic of China, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the President of Russia, and Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Member countries including China, Pakistan, and Russia, can join the online summit.


Member countries taking part will debate on crucial issues such as regional security, economic connectivity, and trade and commerce. The summit will also pave the road for the Islamic Republic of Iran's inclusion and open the door for Belarus' membership.

The government from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan will attend the summit. Dialogue partners Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Turkey will also attend the SCO summit.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the three-hour meeting on 4 July. Manish Tewari, a member of the Indian National Congress and represents Anandpur Sahib in the 17th Lok Sabha, says that PM Modi should ask some questions to Chinese President Xi Jinping at the meeting today.

Manish Tewari has written on Twitter, “At the #SCO summit today @PMOIndia must ask President Xi Jingping why did China transgress across the LAC in April/ May 2020? Why are they not vacating the areas illegally occupied by them even after 38 months ?"

Reportedly, Iran will join the SCO as a new member during the summit. Earlier this month, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, held a telephone conversation with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Zhang Ming, in order to allow Iran to be accepted as a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Zhang Ming said, "From July 4, Iran will have all the rights related to the member nations of the SCO.”
