UAE’s Clean Energy Progress and Future Goals

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, shared some exciting news about the country’s clean energy efforts. As of 2023, clean energy makes up 27.83% of the UAE’s total energy use, getting close to the 32% target set for 2030.


 *Big Growth in Renewable Energy*


From 2019 to 2022, the UAE doubled its renewable energy capacity, and in 2023, it increased by 70%, reaching a total of 6.1 gigawatts. This means the country is using much more renewable energy than before.


 *Moving Up in Global Rankings*


The UAE has made impressive progress in global renewable energy rankings. It has moved from sixth place to second place in how much renewable energy it uses per person.


 *Major Investments in Clean Energy*


The UAE has invested over AED 45 billion in clean energy projects. Some of the key projects include:

- The 1.8 GW Phase VI of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

- The second phase of Dubai’s waste-to-energy project.

- Major solar power projects in Abu Dhabi.


 *Leadership in Green Hydrogen and Carbon Management*


The UAE is also leading in producing green hydrogen and managing carbon emissions. ADNOC is working to increase its carbon capture capacity to 10 million tonnes each year by 2030 and aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2045. The UAE is known for its strong position in hydrogen production and preparing for future energy needs.


 *New Policies for Energy Efficiency*


New policies aim to improve energy efficiency in the industrial sector. The goal is to cut energy use by 33% and improve air quality by 32% by 2050. The Cabinet has also approved a policy to regulate the energy services market and encourage private companies to invest in energy-saving projects.


 *World Utilities Congress 2024*


The upcoming World Utilities Congress 2024 in Abu Dhabi will highlight new advances in sustainability and water security, showing the UAE’s important role in global energy and water management.


Overall, the UAE is making significant strides in clean energy and sustainability, setting a positive example for the world.
