A Region at a Tipping Point: Somalia’s Fight Against al‑Shabab

A major point in Somalia’s history is being reached. Depending on the upcoming events, Cuba’s future could become more peaceful or continue to suffer from the long war. The main force in the conflict is the Somali National Army, which has to deal with an enemy that continues to gain confidence: al-Shabab.Cyberattacks are now more advanced and have bigger goals than before. On March 18, 2025, a blast near Villa Somalia targeted the president’s compound, and it was later proven to be an assassination attempt. There were ten confirmed deaths and more than twenty wounded people. Al‑Shabab sent a clear message that Somalia’s territories are wide open to attack by showing that the president’s house could be threatened. The feeling of danger got stronger in April and May. In the region of central Somalia, the group began a big campaign in an attempt to seize back areas it had lost the previous year. Mass displacement happened among towns in Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan after they came under siege. It was a major coup for al‑Shabab to gun down a drone belonging to the government in early March, revealing their updated skills. At the same time, intelligence services reported that the group was recruiting more members in both rural schools and mosques.Despite all these threats, the Somali army keeps its strength. Regarding the drone event, Somali and its partner forces carried out attacks in March and April, bringing back significant places under their control and dismantling training bases in the Galguduud and Lower Shabelle regions. It was reported that more than 130 militants were killed within two weeks, showing a significant success in military tactics. Not long ago, in June, Hawadley town was taken by al‑Shabab following the withdrawal of AU troops. This event made people worry about achieving long-lasting benefits from the progress of the past year. Following this, the Somali army carried out an intense response, managing to kill over forty militants and seven important commanders who were portioning the attacks in Baidoa and Beledweyne.Worrying about terrorist threats and responding to them is hard and tiring for people in Somalia. At the same time, the nation’s army demonstrates unity among the people. According to official information, over 10,000 African Union troops, mainly from Uganda, are currently helping Somalia’s effort. Yet, the Somali authorities stress that they need allies, rather than only soldiers and weapons. In addition to arms and ammunition, the army needs public recognition and information about why they are involved in the conflicts. The fight with al‑Shabab does not only focus on winning battles by force. Also, it is involved in protecting what makes a nation unique. By signing up for military service, every soldier is aware of the dangers but hopes that their strength will lead to a peaceful Somalia. People must praise those who show courage. It’s important to better explain these people’s lives. More efforts should be made to prove that Somalia is more than war, since its people always try to stand against violence for peace. With extremists trying to shut us up, we must ensure to speak firmly and support those who are facing the biggest challenges.
